Much was discussed, and a great meal was enjoyed by chef Graziano Tecchio from MINT (who has a niece in the GW Elementary School Montessori program) in Rondout Kingston. He provided parents with some of his signature dishes that included a Radicchio and Endive Salad, Tuna Tartare with Scallops and homemade Pasta with Tomato Sauce. It was a lovely and productive day.

RESCHEDULED: GW PTO Business Meeting: Guest Dr. Paul Padalino to Follow-Up on Title One Funding, February 25th, 2014 6:00pm – 8:00pm (in Art Room, TBD)

Dear Parents,

Due to the recent storm, we had to reschedule the PTO business meeting that was originally to take place on February 3rd.

THE RESCHEDULED DATE WILL BE Tuesday, February 25th at 6:00pm. Dr. Padalino will be in attendance. I expect it to run late (8:00pm) due to the need to address some important general business – and to give Dr. Padalino, our guest tomorrow evening, plenty of time to answer questions regarding Title One funding.

As always, we will provide two childcare providers for the children  to play in the cafeteria. Parents/teachers will meet in the Art Room (TBD) and are invited to bring snacks for their children and to share. Please avoid any nuts or nut treats in the case there are children with allergies. If you have a lot of energy, you can also bring something for the parents to snack on. I may bring a fruit/cheese tray from somewhere.

(NOTE: This note was sent in an email to the GW PTO. If you are a PTO Parent/Teacher, plan to attend and would like a copy of anything noted here, please send a request to: Rebecca Martin  [email protected] )

Attached, you will find a draft PTO budget that I am hoping to pass tomorrow evening (the main items are school events/programs that we wish to fund this year), draft program/event explanations,  a summary of last week’s Natural Playscape Committee meeting and Title One Questions for Dr. Padalino

(Be certain to look at the tabs in the budget found at the bottom of the budget pages).

Also attached are minutes from our meetings in November and December. We have created a system for minutes to be a shared task. Thanks to Amy and Heather for these.  January is forthcoming.

If you have a chance to review the materials, and have any questions following (or see any errors) – please send them along to me

GW Elementary School Pictures
We are so excited to have found Shelly Wood Studios, a local photographer who has her own business and works with many schools in the Hudson Valley region.  She is professional and thoughtful – and we are sure the children will have a great experience having their individual and class photographs this year.

Class schedules will be posted in the main lobby of the school next week – and we ask that any parents who might want to be on hand to lend a hand to sign-up.

Order forms with all sorts of great packages to choose from will be going home with the children on MONDAY SEPTEMBER 30th. They will need to be returned to the child’s class teacher by MONDAY, OCTOBER 7th.

2:00pm – 3:00pm

3rd Annual “Walk Around the Block” Walk-a-Thon Fundraiser!
We are gearing up for this year’s “Walk around the Block” event that is a part of the “Walk to School Day”, a global event that involves communities from more than 40 countries walking and biking to school on the same day.

Now in it’s third year, the GW Elementary School will do it again, but this time – we’re making it into a ‘Walk-a-thon” fundraiser for our school PTO!  Call all of your aunts and uncles! Grandmothers and grandfathers!  Sponsor your child as they walk for their health…and GW projects on the horizon such as a natural playscape, 2014’s moving up ceremony, field trips and more.

The walk will take place from 2:00pm – 3:00pm. Parents interested in joining us will be asked to arrive and sign-out their child at 2:00pm – and so that they can leave for home when the walk is complete.

Sponsor forms for our ‘walk-a-thon’ will be sent home with the children on MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 23rd and must be returned to your child’s teacher by FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4th.

8:00am – 4:00pm

Clothing and Toy Drive Fundraiser
The GW Elementary School PTO parent Jody Froman has organized a clothing/toy drive fundraiser on Friday, October 18th!   The community will be asked to drop off their used items at a one day collection in the front of the school (off of the gymnasium).

Sponsored by “Fashion Republic” all donations are processed and shipped to people in need. The proceeds will go towards the GW PTO Programs and Activities.

More information soon!  Have a look by visiting this LINK to see what sorts of items we are collecting in advance.  Save yours and bring them to us on the 18th!

10/23 – 10/24 – 10/25
Wednesday – Thursday – Friday
(see times below)

Scholastic Fall Bookfair
The book fair will take place this year on Wednesday, October 23rd (visit and purchase all day); Thursday, October 24th (visit and purchase all day and into the evening) and Friday, October 25th (visit and purchase 1/2 day).

Thursday night is parent teacher conference night, so we will be open for sure to give parents a chance to come by. It’s also a good opportunity for a bake sale. Who’s in?

Other efforts that are in the hopper include a fall ‘Yankee Candle’ fundraiser, Latino Festival, Election Day Bake Sale and more.  Keep an eye out on our front entrance! New banners with our logo will be prominently placed!

If you’d like more information, contact PTO President Rebecca Martin-Grenadier at [email protected]

A close look at an updated budget to reflect this year’s school needs and fundraisers.

* GW School Photos

We are set for school photos for the children to occur on October 8/9/10 with a new vendor, Shelly  Wood Studios.  Order forms/envelopes will be sent home with all of the children on September 30th and will need to be returned to their teacher by October 7th (that gives parents a week to get them back).   We are going to have a parent sign-up sheet and would appreciate parent helpers. We encourage parents to participate during their child’s allotted classroom allotted. By the time we meet in October, we should have that schedule in the case that we need to fill in.

* Clothing Drive Fundraiser

Jody is organizing another clothing drive fundraiser, to take place on Friday, 10/18 from 8:30am – 4:00pm.  A list of everything to be collected will be posted on the website, and sent home in a flyer.

* Safe Walk to School Day and potential Fundraiser

We are waiting to learn if CCE is organizing a ‘Safe Walk To School Day’ event in October, and checking to see if we can make it into a fundraiser ‘walk-a-thon’ where students enlist sponsorship for their walk. Neither is yet confirmed.

We’d like to promote/create new PTO committees to attract more of parent population.

– Natural Playscape Committee

Ongoing. Led by Ann Loeding.

– School Newspaper and Yearbook Committee

Want to help the children put together a school newspaper – and at the same time, organize a yearbook for the kids? Here’s your chance.  Currently, there is a group of parents working through TOPS with children and a newspaper idea. Help them to take their writings to then next step.

– GW 2020

How might the GW School look in the year 2020?  A new committee to organize parents who are interested in discussing and envisioning the future of the GW Elementary School.

– GW School Garden Committee and Healthy Meals

A working title. This committee will be of support to the steward of the GW Elementary School garden, as well as working to improve breakfast and lunch options for the children at the GW Elementary School.

– GW PTO Finance Committee

Led by Jody Froman. Could also include grant writing.

Several new programs might include:

– Pennies for Programs

We are searching for a coin drop to permanently place in the lobby of the school. All of the coins collected each semester will be broken up between classrooms for the teachers to purchase new supplies, host guests – whatever they wish to do throughout the year given their allotment.

– Cultural Festivals: From around the world

Imagine fall and spring festival with a theme that reflects our GW Population? Latino, African American, Italian, Jewish, Irish, Asian.  Celebrating our cultural backgrounds with events, no matter how large or small.
