What is the difference between a PTA and a PTO?

The GW Elementary School has a PTO.

A PTO is “an independent parent group; in other words, any non-PTA group.” A PTA on the other hand is “a local parent group formally affiliated with its state’s PTA organization and the National PTA”.

There is a lot of reading out there on the subject.  For a synopsis visit PTO Today on the web.
