Tom and Sharon’s E1 class took their students to the Maple Ridge Community.  This trip was a perfect match for the Core Investigations work we are doing in class about diversity in schools.  Our 25 students teamed up with 22 1st through 4th graders at Maple Ridge.

The day began with a sharing of what school was like in each school.  Then we sang “This Land is Your Land” and “Willoby Wallaby.”  The we went on a nature hike, with everyone also getting a ride on the horse cart.  This was followed by a tour of the barns and free play time where the students played in the sandbox, monkey bars, or played kickball.

Another highlight of the day was lunch.  Our students joined the entire community and ate lunch with their partners.  After singing “Five Little Pumpkins” students were asked what they enjoyed about there trip.

On the bus ride home, which was funded by the GW PTO, we reflected on the day, and then wrote about it and shared our writing in the class.

We look forward to hosting the Maple Ridge students at GW sometime soon.
